about

DISC0 DISC0 compilation series : A compilation featuring a wide variety of experimental work. The CDR is crammed to almost 80 minutes and the sound ranges from minimalism to droning and fragments of noise. Material that will expand the reaches of your (sub)consciousness.
---
he second volume of this series seems the best compilation coming from Poland I’ve ever heard. The circle of Zenial’s connections expands. For the purpose of this review I parceled out this edition into a few blocks of artists. I was most curious about the one of Polish contingent: Surparadial – a total enigma to me, very impressive dark ambient; Marek Choloniewski made an interesting piece for modulated voice and grating electronica; Zbigniew Karkowski surprises with gyrating, droning streams of sonics and volume setting manipulations; Andrzej Izdebski & Tadeusz Sudnik present an audio collage on bass guitar and electronica. The Polish set is rounded out with a collaborative piece by Zenial and Andrzej D.Dudek, a surprising (considering the release’s general character), relaxing piece, not much unlike things from Biosphere, Alio Die or Steve Roach. A propos, it’s Roach’s and Andrew Lagowski’s tracks that open “Disco, Disco”, thus securing to the signal victory of the ambient music over other genres presented in this set. However, it wasn’t them (though they are undeniably good at what they do) who made for the strength of the ambient faction – the words are praise are particularly due to lesser known acts like Surparadial and the new wave of Japanese dark ambient: Sunao Inami, Minoru Yonemoto, Hideko Kawamoto. From among the rest, I’d pick up Roel Meelop for delicate, ionizing minimal noise and Günter Schroth for a surprisingly interesting rendition of music based on bar codes decoding – it’s digestible in a short piece like that). An interesting set that guarantees a good deal of rewarding sonics.
